But Wait... There's More

This past week members discussed mobile time entry, reviews of wireless carriers, going paperless, the LastPass Hack and more. It’s not surprising that many of the best resources sit within ILTA’s treasure chest.

MOBILE TIME ENTRY

With the age of the global 24/7 attorney, have you moved to mobile time entry? Do firms need new time entry solutions with the rise of alternative fee arrangements (AFAs)? First, the billable hour remains strong. According to a recent survey by Research and Markets, the implementation of AFAs continues to increase, but slowly. AFAs now account for 22% of big law’s revenue. Second, The Cyber Advocate provides a review of several timekeeping apps available for iOS, Android or both in “6 Excellent Timekeeping Apps for Lawyers.” These apps will not automatically improve time entry habits. For advice on improving timekeeping compliance within your organization, see the ILTA webinar from earlier this year, “Drive Timekeeping Success Through Attorney Engagement.”

WIRELESS CARRIERS REVIEW

Though aimed at the individual shopper, The Wirecutter’s Best Wireless Carriers from April 2015, should prove helpful with its assessment of coverage and availability of devices on different wireless carriers’ plans. While searching for current reviews, I found discussions on Wear Your Own Device (WYOD) policies. To learn more about wearables at work, read these articles on WYOD.

“WYOD Arrives as Wearable Market Matures” from TechTarget.

“Pros and Cons of Wearable Tech in the Enterprise” from Baseline Magazine.

Paperless Office

15 years ago, as you walked past an office, you might have heard someone inside but not seen them behind the yard-high stack of paper. Could you have envisioned your office becoming paperless? The time may have arrived. Two ILTA members, Vicki Lee and Jodi Owens, blogged about developing processes for a paperless environment. Also, see these articles on how and why attorneys can go paperless or rely less on paper.

“Is it Possible to Go Completely Paperless in a Law Office?” from Above the Law.

“Going Paperless Cuts Costs, Improves Services” from The Legal Intelligencer.

“Simplifying Documents: A Paperless Life and Law Firm” from The Legal Intelligencer

LastPass Hack

As many ILTA members reported, LastPass experienced a breach last week. LastPass communicated the extent of the hack -- the encrypted user vaults of passwords remain safe. To ensure ongoing stored password safety, a LastPass user can change his/her master password. LastPass provided recommended steps to remain secure. In addition to these recommendations, Macworld wrote “LastPass Was Hacked: Here’s What You Have to Do” and SecureIDNews wrote “Don’t Sweat the LastPass Breach.”  For some good password tips to forward to your organization, see Episode 1 of the podcast Security Talk with Jon and Greg, “When to Use a Unique Password.”

Something extra

While searching for just the right information I often find something interesting though unrelated to the topic covered in But Wait… There’s More. This week I found the Business Management Daily’s “Office Technology Tips.” Enjoy these simple, ready-made tips you can share with your office.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org.
