But Wait... There's More

This past week members sought advice on mobile device management and reimbursement, document retention policies and products and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

MDM and Reimbursement

In the discussion forums ILTA members discussed mobile device management policies and reimbursing attorneys and other firm personnel. Some respondents allow a combination of firm purchased cellphones and personally purchased cellphones but most do not purchase phones for attorneys and staff. Many reimburse attorneys and some staff but the range of reimbursement is broad. Now onto policies. Check your state law regarding reimbursement. The 2014 California Court of Appeals Second District decision, Cochran v. Schwan’s Home Service, Inc. (228 Cal.App.4th 1137 (2014)), states “An employee need only show that he or she was required to use a personal cell phone to make work-related calls, and he or she was not reimbursed.” With your policy in place, do you now need an MDM software? ILTA Volunteer, Ricky Brooman, has you covered in the Peer to Peer Best Practices article, “Navigating Through the MDM Software Market.” Also review the new ILTA Peer - Security Best Practices document with sections on BYOD and MDM to name a few.

Information Governance Policies, Implementation and Products

It used to be that saying “record retention” was the quickest way to clear a room. Record retention policies now fall under the information governance umbrella as described by Lee Nemchek in “The Maturation of RIM into IG in Law Firms.” ILTA has educational content on implementation of information governance policies including the webinar “Keys to a Successful Records Management Implementation” and recommendations for law firms becoming IG consultants, “Information Governance Consulting: Law Firm Opportunity or Mistake?”

SOMETHING EXTRA – What We Seek When Hiring, Cyber Attacks and AI

Here a hack, there a hack, ILTA volunteers have your back. With the Russian cyber-attacks last week and the Panama Papers leaked early this week, it’s hard to feel secure. Study the ILTA Peer - Security Best Practices document. Beyond the above referenced MDM coverage, this guide can serve as a checklist of what you need to do to keep your organization secure.

The ILTA 2015 Staffing Survey came out a few weeks ago. I found the data collected on criteria for hiring new staff informative. See pages 7 and 35. Whether recruiting, hiring or hunting, keep these criteria in mind.

If artificial intelligence piques your interest or is on your need-to-know list, you can catch up on a recent ILTA and RAVN presentation in the United Kingdom, “Artificial Intelligence for Law Firms – the Low Down.” For a little extra and to catch audience comments, scan the Twitter feed at #legalai.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics.
