I spoke with Matt Homann last week about his involvement in the upcoming Leadership New.0 seminar. Matt, a self-described recovering lawyer and the CEO and founder of Filament and Kendeo, will facilitate a Leader’s Lab at Leadership New.0 on November 3rd in Chicago. (You can register now.) Named an ABA Legal Rebel in the first class in 2009 and named a FastCase 50, Matt will bring together insightful discussions in this workshop with a panel, break-outs for partnering to solve problems and storyboarding* all to help you find answers to the questions “What does it mean to be a leader today?” and “What skills do the next generation of leaders need to succeed?” Matt Homann reminded me that in many organizations, Millennials already lead. He hopes participants in the Leader’s Lab of all generations will identify how to improve their leadership skills and learn to foster new and aspiring leaders from the Millennials to the next generation on the payroll, Generation Z.

Matt and I also discussed leadership styles. He believes we can no longer force a single leadership style on an organization. He explained that the people we manage act differently and work differently from our shrinking attention spans to our expectations due to changes in technology and society. He said, “There has to be a realization that a management style starts with the agility and the capacity to adapt to the workers you need.” Matt is excited to talk about the future of the enterprise and explained that we need to think about more than what new leaders must improve in their leadership skills. We need to imagine the world they will lead. “They aren’t leading my organization but rather one I won’t even recognize.” Attend the Leader’s Lab to share ideas on how we prepare the next generation of leaders.

*About storyboarding: Matt Homann describes storyboarding as “a powerful way to remember and synthesize content.” It frees people from taking notes and gives people a useful way to share what they learned. Here are examples of storyboarding from a few ILTACON 2016 sessions.
