Leading up to the new year members discussed security materials, information governance policies and more. This week’s ILTACON TV highlight focuses on the thought leaders Jeff Brandt and William Caraher. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Information Governance – Developing Policies and Best Practices

Members recently discussed developing policies for information governance. These policies spill into areas of security, disposition, intranets, extranets and well, everything. To take a deeper dive into the different segments of an IG policy consider some ILTA gems. In an ILTA white paper article, “How Information Governance Initiatives Create Sustainable Cost Containment,” John Zahradnick writes of the need to “limit the growth of inventory” both onsite and in offsite storage to contain costs through strong IG policies. Sonia Cheng discussed data challenges and recommended skills to address those challenges in “Skills You Need to Climb the Mountain of Data Challenges.” You will need security to align with your information governance policy. ILTACON 2016 covered this topic in “Security and Information Governance: Together in Perfect Harmony” and for a UK perspective listen to “Risk Management: Security and Information Governance in Perfect Harmony” from INSIGHT 2016. A strong and supported information governance policy can help an organization stay secure, develop a culture of sharing and provide opportunities to collaborate with clients. Heed Dan Hunsinger’s advice in “They Are Going to Share Files With or Without You.”

Security Resources from Your Peers

As you wrapped up 2016, your peers shared many security resources on the LegalSEC Library you will find helpful. These include

When he shared this content, Jon Washburn also encouraged you to contribute. He said, “It is still a small collection at the moment, although we do hope it has been useful, and that’s where the rest of the ILTA community comes in – we need you to share your materials too. If you have an example of something that worked for your firm send it directly to Susan McClellan at smcclellan@iltanet.org... (we) will go through what you send and “genericize” it so you don’t have to. We want to create a collection that can easily be tweaked and used by any firm and post new items on a quarterly basis.”

ILTACON TV Highlights – Information Sharers, Jeff Brandt and William Caraher

Back at ILTACON 2016, Todd Corham sat down with Jeff Brandt in the ILTACON TV studio. Jeff Brandt, CIO at Jackson Kelly and editor for PinHawk Law Technology Daily Digest, discussed the value he gets from his work distilling the best information on legal technology to share with his 17,000 subscribers. Jeff also shared his views on leadership. Randi Mayes talked with William Caraher, CIO and Director of Operations at von Briesen & Roper, in the ILTACON TV studio about security awareness, The Live Feed, his firms’ recent project to develop a culture of sharing and his own practice of sharing information in the social media space. SOMETHING EXTRA – Upcoming Windows 10 Deployment session, Prepping for GDPR, the Tableau conference and more

In late December Chris Dale of the eDisclosure Information Project interviewed Patrick Burke of Seyfarth Shaw on corporate readiness for GDPR. Learn why GDPR is top of mind for many corporate clients in the United States and beyond.

ILTA volunteers posted many blogs over the last few weeks including David Hobbie’s review of the Tableau Conference. And yes, he’s not making it up. Bill Nye, “the Science Guy,” spoke at the conference. David Tremont encourages his fellow “network geeks” to stay on top of new networking technology in “Infrastructure and the Future of IT: Software Defined Networking.”

ILTA members keep searching for experiences with Windows 10 Deployment. There’s an upcoming ILTA webinar on January 24, Windows 10 Deployment – SCCM. Go to ILTA’s Virtual Events to register.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
